What Is Biophilia?

The term biophilia describes the innate human tendency to seek connection with nature and natural systems. Derived from the Greek words bios (life) and philia (love or affinity), biophilia reflects a fundamental aspect of human biology: we are evolutionarily adapted to respond positively to the natural world.

The concept was popularized by biologist E.O. Wilson in the 1980s through the biophilia hypothesis, which suggests that humans evolved in close relationship with nature, and that this connection remains essential to human health and well-being. Long before modern buildings and cities, survival depended on understanding landscapes, seasonal patterns, and ecological cues.


From Biophilia to Biophilic Design

Building on this idea, biophilic design emerged as a practical framework for applying biophilia within the built environment. Researchers and practitioners such as Stephen Kellert played a key role in translating the theory into design principles that could be applied to architecture, interiors, and urban environments.

Biophilic design focuses on intentionally integrating natural elements, materials, patterns, and spatial experiences into buildings—supporting physical health, mental well-being, and cognitive performance. This includes direct connections to nature, indirect references through materiality and form, and spatial strategies that reflect natural environments.
